The core studio project takes on an experimental approach by combining an abstracted spatial prototype with the widely investigated program. The purpose of a library is growing increasingly adaptable and multifaceted. There is a reinterpretation which a library is no longer a place to check out books and remain quiet. The space of a library facilitates a wide spectrum of programs. Highly adaptable spaces for communication, education, and entertaining are extremely desirable for the architecture that is aiming to become the cultural center of a city.
Situated near the Providence riverfront, the proposal introduces two path crisscrossing, generating four volumes around them. Each level sectionally shifts to generate various types of spaces while maintain the impression of the cross. The mass of the building sits above the semi-open plaza, creating a seamless transition from the street to the building.
Site Strategy
The selected site is located at the edge of the financial district of downtown providence. The speculated pedestrian frequency on four sides of the streets is projected across the site. The process of abstraction generates an density grid which helps to inform the center of cross path.

Aggregation Strategy
Two services core separates the circulatory path and the programmatic zones. Each horizontal plate is cut and folded according to the programatic demand.
Plan Strategy
Different levels of privacies within the library can be established by subtly changing the relationship between the cross path and the program zones. Visual and noise barrier can be achieved without deploying additional walls. The square typology ensures ample solar exposure on all sides, and setbacks from the footprint are introduced to counteract overexposure.
